One of the most intense fighting franchises returns in full force in SoulCalibur V. This time, players take the role of Patroklos and his sister Pyrrha as they seek to reunite after childhood separation. The mighty sword Soul Calibur is back, as is the villainous Nightmare, and they are ready for action.
The original SoulCalibur (itself a sequel to Soul Edge) reinvented the fighting game. Namco, one of the most innovative developers of all time, first game-changed fighting games with Tekken, the first one-on-one fist-smasher to truly use 3D game arenas to their fullest. Then came SoulEdge, which introduced weapons to the 3D fighting game. Finally, the developers at Soul team added 8-way running, armor, and a host of clever changes to the Street Fighter model. The result, released in 1998 in arcades and ported to the Dreamcast in 1999, was SoulCalibur. A legend in the world of gaming by any definition, this masterpiece often makes many “Ten Best Games of All Time” lists, in some cases beating the original Street Fighter II. Sequel after mind-blowing sequel followed, as players took in the mythical story of the all-powerful SoulCalibur sword.
Now the legend returns in SoulCalibur V, which takes the best of this series’ ideas and packages them into a thumb-numbing marathon of 3D fighting goodness. In story mode, players enjoy entrancing cut scenes as they take on Nightmare and restore peace to the world. In arcade mode, players can take on on over twenty-seven characters—including Katsuhiro Harada from Tekken and Ezio Auditore da Firenze from the super franchise Assassin’s Creed.
